FRENVI – Edible cutlery & alternatives to plastic

About us

Welcome to FRENVI.

Our Story

In 2017, the two Indian engineers Abhi and Phani met while studying in Germany and, while still a student, developed the idea of zero-waste tableware solutions in the form of edible cutlery as a response to the EU’s ban on single-use plastic.

“We share a great enthusiasm for technology, but nature and sustainability are also very important to us,” says FRENVI’s founding duo Abhi and Phani. “And we both wanted to take the leap into self-employment and in this way realize our visions. ”

The first attempts at edible cutlery with noticeable, gradual progress from 2018-2019.

As the first purely non-German founding team, the BMWi supported the founding idea with an EXIST start-up grant from August 2019, which led to the founding of FRENVI (FRiendly ENVIronment) in December 2019 and the filing of a patent in January 2020 – shortly before the Covid pandemic broke out.

As a young, engineering-heavy greentech startup, we rarely sought the limelight, preferring to research and develop, but still won various awards – including the MEXI Award 2021 from Roche AG in the technology category, endowed with 10,000€, or the audience award at the Naturvision Congress 2021. (6.3 Mexi Award with Abhi)

After the implementation of the self-developed Continuous Thermo Compression 3D Forming technology (CTC3DF) in Germany was not realistic due to the financial and pandemic situation, the FRENVI team, together with the German Development Company (DEG, now DEG Impact GmbH), decided to move to India to set up the first production site with FRENVI’s CTC3DF process in Bangalore with the support of the DEG funding program DeveloPPP and to put it into operation after 18 months.

With the tailwind of its first own plant and the successful start of business, FRENVI worked intensively in 2023 on financing the German production and research site, which will be put into operation in Mannheim in spring 2025. In addition to the world’s largest fully automated CTC3DF plant, a greentech research team will find its place there and conduct extensive creative research into other nature-based alternatives to single-use plastic products that also have a proven good ecological balance. In line with the “circular bioeconomy” – in the best case even with an active contribution to climate protection.
